Efforts to introduce science in a simple and engaging way were carried out through an educational activity on making laundry detergent paste at SDN Pedalangan 2. This activity was designed to raise students’ awareness of the importance of cleanliness while also providing them with hands-on experience in creating a simple household product closely related to their daily lives. Through a learning-by-doing approach, students not only listened to explanations but were also directly involved in every step of the process.
The head of the community service team from Diponegoro University, Dr. Drs. Suhartana, M.Si., explained that this activity was not merely a practical session, but also part of an effort to improve students’ understanding of science in a more enjoyable and accessible way. “We introduced the children to the materials used in making detergent paste, including their functions and roles in the process. The procedure was designed to be as simple and safe as possible, allowing them to learn comfortably,” he said.
The activity began with an introduction to the tools and materials used, such as mixing containers, stirrers, and the main ingredients for making detergent paste. Students were then guided through each stage of the process, from mixing the ingredients to producing a ready-to-use product. Throughout the activity, they were closely supervised by the facilitators to ensure that each step was carried out correctly and safely.
The atmosphere of the activity was lively and enjoyable. Students actively asked questions, responded to explanations, and eagerly tried each step demonstrated. Some students even showed great curiosity by asking about the functions of the materials and the processes involved. This interaction made the activity more dynamic and engaging. In addition to the practical session, students were also encouraged to discuss the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene as part of a healthy lifestyle from an early age.
According to the school, activities like this provide a different learning experience compared to regular classroom lessons. By combining theory with direct practice, students can better understand the material being taught. In addition to gaining knowledge, they also develop new skills such as accuracy, teamwork, and the confidence to try new things.
Through this activity, it is hoped that students will not only understand how to make detergent paste, but also develop greater awareness of the importance of cleanliness in their daily lives. The knowledge and experience gained are expected to be applied in a simple way at home, providing long-term benefits.
The event concluded with a short reflection session, where students shared their impressions and favorite moments during the activity. It was then followed by a group documentation session as a form of appreciation for the students’ enthusiasm and active participation.
